We have a very simple business mantra around here, “Protect the Herd.” Every decision that we make as a business is based around the idea that when the Herd does Better, every individual within the Herd will be Better. It is a simple notion to visualize and our team is stronger because of it. When you know that the person working next to you wants you to succeed, amazing things happen. Trust and shared visions become the norm and not the exception.
Let’s Get Juicy
We are having a great month around here so far. Here is a quick brain dump for mid-July. Our Organic Juice Bar is back in full-tilt this week. The demand for our fresh juices has been so intense, that we broke our cold-pressed juicer. We are back squeezing right now though.
What’s Next?
July. Wow. What a long Covid winter we are coming out of…finally. So happy to see all the faces that I am surrounded with daily. 85% of our employees were hired during Covid. So now we can see the faces beneath the masks.
But as transition out of lock-down mode, we are left with the burning question of What’s Next? So here are some thoughts that I would like to share with you as we as individuals and businesses head back into
normalcy.
Pride
Few Housekeeping Notes:
Our website just went through a little refresher. Nothing major, but the Harvest Boxes were affected. With this update, we will not be able to put as many items in the Harvest Boxes as we were before. We had to put them on a diet.
Germination of Ideas
In all the drama that transpires on a farm/garden, folks mainly get excited about the harvest. We walk out to the podium, hang the “Mission Accomplished” banner, and thank everyone who made this harvest possible.
Notes From the Field
One of my favorite farm writers, Wendell Berry, once wrote that “Eating is an agricultural act.” A simple re-minder for us, that we chew on, can change industries. And I was thinking about that a lot this week as we put the finishing touches on our iteration of hand sanitizer.
Local Food Model Wins Again
For those food nerds out there (like me), you probably have seen one or a dozen articles concerning the rising cost of food that began in March and is not slowing down. And if you have not seen these articles yet, you will. Gas and food prices will be serious water-cooler chatter coming into the summer. I would like to give you some food for thought.
Growing the Family
First to bat this week is a big welcome to Silver Leaf Farms to the party. I have known Aaron and Elan for many years and am/have been really impressed with how they have scaled their Corrales farm in a very thoughtful and professional way.
Meal Kits: 1-Click vs U-Pick
Some of my taste buds favorite memories are harvesting strawberries, warmed by the sun, in our U-Pick patch in Santa Cruz. More berries then I could ever eat. It was the first time in my life that I could eat fresh berries until I was stuffed. I fell in love with the U-Pick.
Minimizing Waste & A Birthday
Cardboard. We have received more than a plethora of emails about reusing the cardboard. Folks, I know that we have the sexiest cardboard boxes that you have ever seen. Unfortunately, we cannot reuse them. It is just not sanitary to build a fort for your cats with them and then turn around and put Local bagels back into them.
